About Me

My name is Paul Joy!

G’day! I’m Paul Joy from Melbourne, Australia. Thanks for dropping in to find out more about me and the informative, creative, engaging and useful work I do using Sketchnotes.

In addition to being a husband, father of three teenagers, an educator, school chaplain and limo driver, I love to use my creative talents to help communicate important messages in an engaging way. As you explore my website I hope you’ll see what I mean.

I remember diligently taking pages and pages of handwritten notes during my studies at high school and then university. Notes that I thought I’d refer back to and reinforce my learning. Actually, those notebooks only got opened again to complete an essay or finish another work requirement in order to meet the course requirements.

Meanwhile, I enjoyed drawing on envelopes and cards to send to friends and family. I doodled in the margins and tinkered with hand-lettering and calligraphy. I created hand-lettered quotes and affirmations and shared them online. After drawing hundreds of quotes, I was invited to work with Hal Elrod and his team to create The Miracle Morning Art of Affirmations: a positive coloring book for adults and kids.

I first heard about ‘Sketchnotes’ when I listened to Mike Rohde on a podcast many years ago. I was intrigued so I dug a little deeper. Turns out that sketchnoting is a happy combination of sketching and note-taking. Who knew!?

I soon discovered that I could bring my own creativity, hand-lettering, sketching and note-taking skills to one page all at the same time. I did courses, read books, practiced and played. I followed others who were also exploring this new genre. I learnt and developed my skills as I went along. With encouragement from Doug Neill from Verbal to Visual (https://verbaltovisual.com/) I began to learn in public and share my work with others.

Lots of people loved my work! Which encouraged me to create more and share more.

This website includes a library of some of my work. I attend workshops and create sketchnotes of the key takeaways. I sit in on keynote speakers and sketchnote the main message and insights. I’ve had a go at creating hand-drawn greeting cards and still enjoy drawing on envelopes to send in the mail.

The sketchnotes I make engage me (and others) to go back to re-read them and reinforce learning. The sketches are a visual reminder of a story that was shared or a key takeaway to remember. They’re attractive and memorable and help readers to recall important information and lessons. Check it out!

Thanks for taking time to explore my work. And if opportunity presents and you think I can help you share your message in a creative and engaging way then please reach out and let’s see if we might be able to work on it together.

Coming soon – a membership program to help you learn the art of sketchnoting with me as your guide.
